9 reasons not to buy the iPhone 18 Pro and wait for the iPhone 20

The iPhone 18 Pro was unveiled today and the improvements over the iPhone 17 Pro are incremental.

If you are thinking about upgrading, it may be worth knowing what Apple is preparing for 2027 — a year in which the company is expected to launch a ground-up redesigned iPhone to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the line, skipping the number 19 for the commemorative edition.

iPhone 20 Pro with all-glass design, under-display Face ID, and A21 chip could arrive in September 2027

The changes expected for the iPhone 20 are the most ambitious since the iPhone X in 2017.

The display is expected to curve on all four sides to hide the metal frame and create a borderless effect, using technology developed in partnership with Samsung.

The Dynamic Island disappears, with Face ID moving under the display — though this technology has been in development for years and its availability for 2027 is not guaranteed.

The camera is expected to use an image sensor developed in-house by Apple to replace the Sony sensors, with LOFIC technology capable of up to 20 stops of dynamic range.

Physical buttons may be replaced by haptic versions with no real movement, integrated into the chassis.

The chip will be the second-generation A21 Pro on a 2nm process, the battery will use a silicon anode for greater capacity without increasing size, and vertically stacked high-bandwidth memory will improve on-device AI performance.

Screen sizes are also expected to grow — to 6.4 inches and 7 inches, up from the 6.3 and 6.9 inches of the iPhone 18 Pro.

It is important to bear in mind, however, that we are 12 months from launch and the most ambitious features have a habit of slipping.

Under-display Face ID in particular has been “two years away” for around five years now. But if even half of the rumoured features make it to the final product, the iPhone 20 should be the most significant upgrade in nearly a decade.
