Home security cameras: how to protect what is yours without paying monthly fees

You buy a security camera, install it in five minutes, and three days later you realise that the features you actually care about are locked behind a monthly subscription.

A year on, you have paid more for cloud storage than for the camera itself. This is an increasingly common reality — and one that is completely avoidable.

At Techbit we have been testing security cameras for several years, and the brands we have worked with most in this segment are Reolink, TP-Link, and Eufy, among others.

These brands offer what this category most needs: cameras with local recording, no mandatory subscriptions, built-in AI features, and storage solutions that stay at home — not on anyone else’s servers.

Security cameras without subscriptions: what you need to know before you buy

How does local recording work?

The vast majority of modern cameras have a microSD card slot.

Rather than sending video to external servers, the camera records directly to the card — and you still have access to recordings through the app from anywhere, without paying anything for it.

When the card is full, the camera automatically deletes the oldest footage and continues recording over it.

The most obvious limitation is that if the camera is stolen or damaged, the card goes with it. This is where a solution we have been testing comes in — one that completely changes the equation.

The HomeHub keeps your recordings at home

The Reolink HomeHub is a small storage hub that stays inside the house and centralises recordings from all Reolink cameras connected to your network.

Footage is stored locally — no mandatory cloud, no subscriptions, and no dependence on third-party servers. It is the ideal solution for anyone who wants a complete, self-contained surveillance system, and it was the missing piece that allows us to recommend Reolink without reservation.

We tested the HomeHub alongside the Reolink Argus Series B350 — a kit that combines a wireless outdoor camera with centralised local storage.

Setup is straightforward and the result is a complete system that runs autonomously, with no subscription of any kind.

Beyond Reolink, other brands also offer centralised hub solutions that allow local storage of recordings.

Looking for a home camera? Here are the ones we have tested and recommend

The Reolink Argus 3 Ultra is a solid outdoor option from the brand. It is a wireless 4K camera, solar-powered, with local recording to a microSD card and AI-based detection of people and vehicles. No cables, no subscriptions, and no battery worries — the solar panel takes care of that.

For 360-degree coverage, the Reolink Altas PT Ultra is the rotating model in the range, designed to monitor large outdoor areas with a single camera. Automatic rotation and motion tracking allow it to cover an area that would typically require two or three fixed units.

This camera can be purchased for €178.49.

The Reolink TrackMix takes a different approach, featuring two image sensors in a single body that simultaneously cover a wide angle and an optical zoom. It is useful when you want both the broader context and close-up detail — for example, the entrance to the house and a vehicle’s number plate at the same time.

This camera can be purchased for €188.89.

What to look for before buying a camera

Regardless of brand, four factors should guide the decision.

Publicidade

First, confirm the camera accepts microSD cards of at least 128GB and always opt for Endurance-class cards, designed for continuous writing.

Second, check that people, animal, and vehicle detection is processed on the camera itself using AI — without relying on the cloud to analyse the footage.

Third, consider the power source. Battery-powered cameras are easier to install but have lower endurance in high-traffic areas. In those cases, a wired camera or one with a solar panel is more suitable.

Fourth — and most importantly — always confirm that the essential features, such as alerts, recording, and remote access, work without a subscription. Many brands lock exactly these functions behind paid plans.

Is cloud storage worth paying for?

For normal home use, rarely. Cloud storage makes sense in very specific situations — such as needing to keep weeks of continuous recording, a high risk of camera vandalism where the card could be destroyed along with the device, or the possibility of the HomeHub being stolen.

To see who rang the doorbell, receive alerts when someone enters the garden, or check outside the house while you are away, local recording delivers exactly the same result for zero euros per month.
