The HONOR Robot Phone, the smartphone with a motorised gimbal camera that rises out of the body of the device, has been through the usual durability tests on the JerryRigEverything channel. The results were largely positive, but with one important caveat for anyone thinking of using it in dusty or sandy environments.
HONOR Robot Phone survives 26 seconds of direct flame and won’t bend, but the gimbal arm seizes up with dirt
In the scratch test, the screen started showing marks at level 6 and deeper grooves at level 7, a normal result for today’s smartphones. The gimbal arm is made of titanium with a painted finish, the frame is aluminium, and the back also appears to be metal.
In the direct flame test, the screen held up for 26 seconds with no visible damage, an impressive result. The bend test was another strong point. Despite the placement of the antenna lines, the phone barely gave at all and didn’t come close to snapping in half.
The weak spot the tests revealed is the gimbal camera coming into contact with dirt. The HONOR Robot Phone carries an IP54 rating, which offers basic protection against dust but doesn’t cover the finest particles.
When the tester deliberately covered the mechanism with soil, the arm became completely jammed. After cleaning it, the arm rose again but couldn’t retract.
Anyone planning to use this phone in dusty, sandy or muddy environments should take extra care around the camera area.
