HUAWEI yesterday unveiled its new earbuds aimed at a younger, more casual style — while still packing all the important features of a serious audio product.
Here is our review and verdict on the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO.
HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO review — Good sound combined with a broad feature set
Huawei has been consistently investing in the FreeBuds line to bring audio features that were until recently exclusive to premium products into a wider market.
The FreeBuds Neo are the latest addition to the family, occupying an interesting position with flagship-level active noise cancellation for a younger audience that wants neither to compromise on style nor on performance.
The HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo combine active noise cancellation with an average depth of 30dB, a triple microphone system with a bone conduction sensor for clear calls in environments with up to 95dB of noise, an 11mm Hi-Res certified driver, unlimited spatial audio for all devices, Bluetooth 6.0 with a range of up to 170 metres, and up to 10 hours of battery life per charge or 40 hours with the charging case.

The Light Mini Stem design — with each earbud weighing just 4.8 grams and a spacecraft-inspired charging case — is available in four colours: Ice White, Nebula Pink, Stellar Silver, and Starry Black.
They are available for €129.00, with a €30 launch discount bringing them down to €99.
Design and build quality
The HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO present themselves as a young, mobility-focused solution designed to work equally well for work and leisure.
The case has a flatter, more elongated shape — unusual at first glance — but it is compact and easy to carry, sitting comfortably in the hand.

On the front sits a small status LED, with a USB-C charging port on the bottom.
Opening the case reveals earbuds inspired by the Apple AirPods Pro, but noticeably smaller and weighing just 4.8 grams each — light enough to barely notice in the ear.

Inside the case, the pairing button extends from the exterior to sit alongside the earbuds.

The earbuds themselves are sleek and designed to sit aesthetically close to Apple products — well suited to attracting a younger audience.

Three sizes of ear tips are included in the box (counting the ones already fitted) to adapt to different ear shapes.
Touch controls are on the stem, where various actions can be assigned to one or more taps.

In terms of colours, they are available in Ice White, Stellar Silver, Starry Black, and Nebula Pink — the latter exclusive to the Huawei Store.
IP55 certification makes them suitable for workouts, indoors and outdoors, without restrictions.
Comfort and ergonomics
The HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO fit securely in the ear, staying firmly in place without risk of falling out during sudden movements or a run.
Their compact size and light weight make them comfortable for long work sessions. The small form factor also helps them go largely unnoticed.
Being in-ear earbuds further improves the fit and helps with passive isolation of surrounding sounds.

Setup and the HUAWEI Audio Connect app
In terms of connectivity, the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO use Bluetooth 6.0 with the ability to connect to two devices simultaneously.
They connect to smartphones — Android or iOS — as well as tablets, computers, smart TVs, Huawei smartwatches, and any other device that supports a wireless Bluetooth connection.
On Android — the environment in which we tested them — simply connecting via Bluetooth as with any other device is enough to start listening.

For the full experience and the ability to customise the various features, installing the HUAWEI Audio Connect app is required.
As with all Huawei apps, it must be downloaded directly from the Huawei website since the brand is restricted in the US market and does not have access to the Google ecosystem. Simply open this link, download the APK, and install it outside the Play Store.
Once the earbuds are connected, the app provides a range of information and controls for the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO.

The home screen shows the battery level for each earbud and the case, as well as which devices the earbuds are currently connected to.
A gaming mode can be activated to optimise the sound experience and reduce notification and app interference.
Under sound options, noise control can be customised — from disabling it entirely, to a light awareness mode for hearing ambient sound, to full cancellation, subdivided into four categories depending on environment: dynamic, cosy, general, and Ultra.
Quieter spaces suit the cosy setting, while very loud environments call for Ultra mode.

The HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO also stand out for their spatial audio, available in either a fixed mode for surround sound or a head-tracking mode in which the sound comes from a fixed point in space that adjusts as you move your head.
For both modes there are additional special effects — Cinema, Movie, and Performance Venue — with the apparent duplication of cinema-related options likely a translation error.
There is also a seven-preset equaliser followed by the option to create a custom configuration. The available presets are: default, bass boost, treble boost, vocals, symphony, Hi-Fi Live, and shooting game.

Adaptive audio is also available — volume lowers automatically and noise cancellation pauses when the earbuds detect the user is speaking to someone nearby.

Gesture control is fully customisable, with actions assignable to double tap, triple tap, long press, and swipe. Each earbud can be assigned a different function.

Head gesture control is also available — nodding yes or no to accept or reject calls.

Finally, options include pausing music when an earbud is removed, an ear tip fit test, a find-my-earbuds function that plays a sound, and firmware updates.
The app is intuitive and brings almost all features to the main screen.

Active noise cancellation
One of the standout features of the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO is undoubtedly their active noise cancellation.
This feature uses the three microphones to cut ambient noise by up to 30dB — a figure that may sound modest, but given that the isolation is happening directly in the ear canal, the real-world effect is greater than the number suggests, delivering excellent performance in cafés or while outdoors.
A genuine bubble of isolation can be achieved, reaching its peak in Ultra mode, with the dynamic mode already providing a good balance and cutting a large portion of surrounding sound.
Microphone noise rejection is also impressive, rated up to 95dB, courtesy of the three-microphone array and bone conduction sensor. Together they allow calls to be made in noisy environments with the surrounding sound largely cut out and the recording focused on the speaker’s voice.
Even in wind, the system performs well, eliminating most of the interference.

Sound quality
The HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO feature an 11mm dynamic driver with a multi-port equalisation system. The frequency response range runs from 20Hz to 40,000Hz and LDAC HD audio up to 990kbps is supported in high-fidelity on compatible devices.
On Huawei devices, transmission reaches up to 2.3Mbps with lossless high-resolution audio at 48kHz/24-bit.
Noise cancellation and spatial audio further elevate the listening experience.

In our experience, the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO did not disappoint — delivering genuinely good sound quality.
Trebles and mids are well balanced, with vocals and instruments coming through clearly and with good instrument separation, though the sound can feel slightly compressed in some situations — something the in-app equaliser can help address.

The bass is particularly pleasing — present and well-defined without being overbearing, adding depth to the music without dominating.
On calls, voice pickup is sensitive and well captured. The three-microphone setup and bone conduction sensor allow the HUAWEI FreeBuds NEO to isolate the user’s voice effectively and handle surrounding noise impressively for this price point.

Battery life
Huawei promises up to 10 hours of playback on the earbuds alone, extendable to 40 hours with the charging case.
With ANC active, Huawei states battery life drops to around 6.5 hours.
In terms of charging speed, 10 minutes is enough to provide a full day of use.

Who are the HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo for?
The HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo are aimed at younger users looking for active noise cancellation earbuds without paying the entry price of flagship models.
They are especially well suited to students and young professionals who spend hours wearing earbuds during commutes, work sessions, or study — and who value a discreet, comfortable design for extended use.

IP55 certification also makes them suitable for light workouts and outdoor use without concern about sweat or light rain. For those already using other Huawei products such as the GT 7 or Watch 6 smartwatch lines, integration with the brand’s ecosystem is an additional relevant argument.
At €129.00, with a launch discount bringing them to €99.00, the FreeBuds Neo are a very competitive proposition for anyone who wants real active noise cancellation without spending over €100.

Verdict on the HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo
The HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo are a solid proposition for the segment they occupy. The 30dB active noise cancellation is genuinely effective in everyday settings, performing well in cafés, public transport, and shared workspaces.
The triple microphone system with bone conduction sensor is one of the most impressive aspects of these earbuds — with call voice isolation that goes well beyond what this price point would normally suggest.

Sound quality is a pleasant surprise. Bass is well-defined and present without dominating, trebles and mids are balanced with good instrument separation and clear vocals, though the overall sound can feel slightly compressed in some situations — something the in-app equaliser manages to smooth out. Spatial audio adds a genuine extra dimension that meaningfully improves the experience for films and multimedia content.
Comfort is another strong point — 4.8 grams per earbud makes a real difference over long sessions, and the range of ear tip sizes helps find the right fit for each ear. The case design may seem unusual at first with its flatter, elongated shape, but it slips into a pocket easily and holds up well in daily use.

The HUAWEI Audio Connect app is comprehensive and intuitive, with a feature set that rivals more expensive products — though the need to install it outside the Play Store remains unnecessary friction for Android users unfamiliar with the process.
The 10-hour battery life without ANC and 40 hours with the case is a genuine asset, and the 10-minute fast charge for 4 hours of playback is genuinely useful day to day.
At €99 with the launch discount, the HUAWEI FreeBuds Neo are one of the most complete offerings under €100 in the active noise cancellation earbuds market.
