OpenAI launches GPT-Live to make voice conversations more natural and human

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models that replaces the current ChatGPT voice experience.

The stated goal is to make conversations with AI feel closer to talking with a real person.

GPT-Live can listen and speak at the same time and shows it is following the conversation with acknowledgement expressions such as “mhmm” or “got it”.

The model was built for continuous interaction and makes decisions several times per second about when to speak, keep listening, pause, interrupt, or use a tool.

You can jump in with a question, pause to gather your thoughts, or ask ChatGPT to speak more slowly — just as you would in a normal conversation.

OpenAI describes this new technology as its most intelligent voice model to date, using the latest frontier model — currently GPT-5.5 — for web search, deep reasoning, and complex tasks.

While carrying out a task, the model can keep the conversation active and share the results when it finishes.

It also supports real-time translation and displays visual cards with information on weather, stocks, sports, and more. The nine voices available in ChatGPT have also been remastered for this tool.

GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini are being made available today to ChatGPT users worldwide. GPT-Live-1 is the default option for Go, Plus, and Pro plans, while GPT Live-1 mini is the default for free users.

To access it, simply tap the voice button in the app. Voice support with video or screen sharing is not yet available, but OpenAI has indicated it is working on that feature.
