Review of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G – 3 days of battery life with no compromises

Xiaomi recently introduced the new Redmi Note 17 lineup, where we can find the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max as the top of the line.

Being one of Redmi’s most relevant and sought-after series, the new Redmi Note 17 Pro Max brought many new features this year, from a battery we can share to a back cover that changes color throughout the day.

General features of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G arrives in Redmi’s Note line with a lot to offer and a very reasonable price tag.

To start, we have a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a peak brightness of 3500 nits, so viewing content is not a problem in any type of lighting. In terms of protection, it features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 accompanied by an internal construction that protects it from drops of up to 3 meters.

Inside, we find the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor, which can run all applications without issues, as well as a good number of games that run quite smoothly on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. Accompanying this, we also find 8GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of internal storage.

To power everything, and this is one of the device’s biggest highlights, we have a 9210mAh internal battery with up to 100W fast charging capabilities. It also allows reverse charging up to 27W, so when you need to charge another device or a friend’s smartphone, it can serve as a power bank. The brand makes a point of stating that this device lasts up to 3 days of regular use on a single charge and can reach 14 days with highly restricted usage.

Out of the box, we have Android 16 installed with HyperOS 3.4, with 6 years of guaranteed updates for the smartphone (4 for the system and 6 for security).

Even with the large battery, the smartphone has an elegant body measuring 7 x 170 x 8.4 mm and weighing only 229g, which keeps it in a very comfortable range to hold.

In the photography department, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max features a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide angle. On the front, we have a 32MP camera for detailed selfies.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G can be purchased for a MSRP of €599.99 in Black, Green, and Cloud Blush, the latter being the one that changes color depending on the lighting.

A battery for 3 days that can be shared

Xiaomi wanted to be bold and take the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max’s battery to a new level. As such, we have a smartphone with a 9210mAh battery capacity that the company claims can last 3 days of continuous use on a single charge.

Automatically, upon seeing these numbers, we think we’ll have to cut back immensely on our smartphone usage, but in this case, it’s not necessary. With the tests we ran over the last three weeks, the smartphone held up quite well with our normal usage (which is nowhere near exhaustive) during the advertised 3 days, always reaching the end of the 3rd day with at least a 20% charge.

This includes video playback, some gaming moments, and, of course, emails, messages, social networks, and everything else that is part of anyone’s daily life.

This was indeed an impressive point, as we always expect device advertising to be based on controlled environments that rarely correspond to a regular user’s reality.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max also promises 14 days of use in a highly restricted mode, which can be useful for times when we go to a more remote, hard-to-reach area and want to always have a way to contact someone in an emergency. We couldn’t test this theory 100%, but the truth is that a week turned on, connected to the internet to keep receiving notifications and with practically no use, didn’t drain much more than 10% of its power. This indicates that without constant internet connectivity, it would have been even less.

Based on that week, we can conclude that it’s possible to meet the 14 days advertised by the brand; however, to be safe, we should count on 10 days to have some margin of error.

If the need arises, we can also use the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max as a kind of power bank, since the smartphone allows reverse charging up to 27W. To do this, just connect the USB-C cable to both devices, and we start sharing power with the other device.

Even if it’s another smartphone, we can help charge it to 100% without any problem, because the speed is higher than the fast charging of some smartphones, and in the end, we still have more than enough battery left for the rest of the day.

Either way, it’s an impressive milestone for a smartphone that, despite being mid-range, still has the necessary features for the vast majority of users.

Bright display and impressive back

Many brands bet only on the smartphone’s screen, and for the vast majority, the back is just a matte finish or shiny glass on top, and that’s it.

In the case of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi wanted to move forward with a market test where the back of the smartphone is made of a material that can change color depending on UV ray exposure.

This effect is only available in the Cloud Blush color, which is initially considered the white color of the line. After some exposure to UV rays, we begin to notice a difference in color that culminates in a more orange tone with clouds on the back of the smartphone.

Although it’s something small that might go unnoticed by many, it’s a beautiful effect that discreetly manages to offer something different to the smartphone.

On the front, the 6.83-inch AMOLED display allows seamless viewing in any type of scenario, with a very generous peak brightness of 3500 nits. Whether under the sunlight that brought us to 40ºC or during the night with more contained lighting, there was no problem seeing the information on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max’s screen.

The colors are quite well-tuned, and we get a good level of saturation and 1.5K quality, making all multimedia consumption more appealing (if we don’t count the speakers which, despite being two, make the audio sound a bit muffled in some content).

Cameras with some post-processing work

The cameras equipping the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max are quite generous in terms of technical specs, but at the same time, they must have some limitations, as expected.

With daylight lighting, we can get very well-processed photos, with a bit too much saturation in some scenarios, but nothing that clashes with many other similar devices.

There is a good image post-processing system that gives them a bit more contrast, color adjustments, and even white balance control, which helps a lot in getting a more pleasing final result to the eye, although it can get a bit too vibrant with some colors and scenarios.

When we reduce the lighting, the photos turn out very well processed—here, without major exaggerations and with great control over light sources so they don’t become a blur/starburst in the final photograph.

However, on the downside, night photos still require a few seconds to be captured, which isn’t always ideal for these scenarios. Nevertheless, if all goes as planned, we are guaranteed good night photos.

When we focus our attention on the ultra-wide-angle camera, we see more differences here than we’d like. There is more post-processing compensation to try and make up for the camera’s inferior capability compared to the main one, and at night the result isn’t as pretty, losing a lot of detail in some areas.

The 2x zoom is quite good and offers very similar results in the end, but if we go beyond that, we lose a lot of information and detail, which might displease some users.

A smartphone that won’t let you down

At the end of the day, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max manages to deliver practically everything consumers want in a smartphone: resistance, durability, enough battery life so they don’t have to charge the smartphone every day, and good cameras.

All this is present and very well implemented in the device, with AI being part of many of the device’s internal features.

The battery is undoubtedly a factor that deserves a standing ovation. Despite the battery’s rather generous capacity, Xiaomi managed to keep the device light and capable of lasting up to 3 days of normal use, without sacrifices or cutbacks in day-to-day usage.

In addition, taking advantage of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max’s generous battery capacity, the company also lets you share that power with those who need it most through reverse charging of up to 27W, which is more than many smartphone chargers offer.

In the camera department, we have a very satisfactory set of cameras that allow capturing daytime moments with a lot of detail and beautiful colors to look at, even if they can exaggerate a bit sometimes. At night, the balance is much better, but this is where we notice the biggest difference between the main camera and the ultra-wide angle, plus, in both cases, it always takes a while to actually capture the image.

The touch of the back changing color with UV rays, giving the smartphone a new panel, despite being a somewhat experimental point, was very interesting to see as something different on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. This effect only happens in the Cloud Blush color, but the company is considering starting to invest more in this effect.
