REDMI Note 17 5G review – Being well served does not mean spending thousands

The Note line from REDMI has always been one of the brand’s most talked-about, offering the most balanced price-to-quality ratio across the company’s various ranges and standing out for bringing flagship-level features to more accessible price points.

Keeping up with tradition, the REDMI Note 17 5G delivers exactly what is expected — a capable device with solid battery life and everyday performance, without skimping on the key areas.

Over the past few weeks we carried the REDMI Note 17 5G in our pocket to see what this smartphone is capable of.

What the REDMI Note 17 5G has to offer

The REDMI Note 17 5G presents itself as a solid option at an accessible price that packs a lot of good features into a more modest tier.

The 6.99-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz is impressively bright (peak brightness of 1,800 nits), with well-rendered colours and no compromise on detail, and it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.

Under the hood, the REDMI Note 17 5G runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 built on a 4 nm process, paired with either 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM — with the option to expand it virtually up to 16 GB.

On storage, you can choose between 128 GB and 256 GB, with the option to expand further via a microSD card.

One of the main highlights of this 2026/2027 generation is the battery Xiaomi chose to include in each device. The REDMI Note 17 5G houses a 7,700 mAh battery with support for up to 45 W wired fast charging. It also offers 22.5 W reverse wired charging, so you can quickly share power with a friend’s device directly from the phone.

On the camera side, the smartphone features a 50 MP main rear camera (f/1.8 aperture, 5-element lens) and a 16 MP front camera (1/3″ sensor, f/2.5 aperture), with both supporting video recording up to 1080p at 30 fps.

In terms of construction, it has a plastic body as is standard for this tier, but with a good finish that keeps the smartphone lightweight (around 225 g) without sacrificing a well-put-together look. It features IP65 certification, 5G support, NFC, an infrared emitter, an under-display fingerprint sensor, and Hi-Res audio — although it has only a single speaker.

The REDMI Note 17 5G is available in Black, Celestial Purple, and Sky Teal, with a recommended retail price starting at €349.99.

Design and comfort

The REDMI Note 17 5G is not a small phone, nor is it trying to compete with the slimmest devices on the market (169.70 × 79.14 × 8.45 mm) — it is a smartphone that you feel in your hand.

The large dimensions needed to house the generous display may leave the phone comfortable for many users, but tricky to use one-handed for those with smaller hands. In our case, though, we found it very comfortable to use and, considering the battery capacity it holds, it did not feel heavy at all.

The plastic body still conveys a sense of solidity, and the dust and splash resistance certification adds to the peace of mind.

Aesthetically, it is an attractive device, though it does not stand out from many others in the same tier — it stays understated and faithful to a design that works well. The review unit was black; the other available colours add a bit more personality to the look.

Cameras that get the job done

On the camera front, the REDMI Note 17 5G offers a 50 MP main camera and a 16 MP front camera, with a maximum 2× zoom that can be used without any noticeable drop in quality.

Better one rear camera that truly does its job than two cameras that are merely decent at what they do.

And that is what the smartphone delivers. The main camera, in good light, produces very pleasing images with well-rendered colours — though there is a tendency to push contrast slightly to make shots pop in the final image.

This is not a camera that will make headlines in the market, but one that will handle everyday use without any issues for regular, undemanding users who want a smartphone to capture daily moments and share on social media.

As the light fades, you start to feel the processing compensation kicking in to keep results looking appealing, which leads to some tones becoming more saturated than what you see in front of you.

That is not to say the photos are bad — just that there is a noticeable layer of editing applied to compensate for the more modest hardware of this tier.

At night, it is what you would expect. In well-lit areas you can still get a decent overall result, but in darker spots you start to notice grain and a loss of detail. Even so, it is a good enough camera for everyday use for the vast majority of users.

On the front, the selfie camera delivers good quality. The image is well rendered, with pleasant colours and less processing than expected. In portrait mode, the image comes out slightly paler, but the subject cut-out is impressively clean considering it is done entirely digitally.

Battery life to spare

This year’s Note range has one defining trait across all its models, and the REDMI Note 17 5G is no different.

The 7,700 mAh battery easily delivers more than two full days of use on a single charge without any restrictions on how the phone is used. Hours of screen-on time, social media, YouTube videos, the occasional game — running out of power simply is not a concern.

We went two days without charging, and on the third day still made it to nearly midday before hitting the critical percentage where we would not feel comfortable heading out without a charge.

Worth remembering too that the REDMI Note 17 5G supports 22.5 W reverse charging — so when a second device or a tablet needed a top-up, using the smartphone as a power source was straightforward, and we still made it through the rest of the day without any power concerns.

On battery, Xiaomi has done excellent work in how the devices manage their energy, and the ability to share that energy with other devices without compromising the user’s day is a genuinely useful addition.

Overall verdict on the REDMI Note 17 5G

The REDMI Note 17 5G is, broadly speaking, a device with well-considered and very targeted specs designed to meet what everyday consumers are looking for when they do not want anything too specialised or flagship-tier, but something more affordable that will not let them down.

In terms of build and design, the form factor works and the plastic does not feel flimsy when you hold it. That said, it may be challenging for those with smaller hands.

The generous AMOLED display offers a great window for multimedia content — colours are well rendered and brightness is sufficient across different lighting conditions throughout the day.

The processor may not be a flagship chip, but it is more than enough to run everyday apps and handle some games without issues. Everything runs smoothly and HyperOS 3 based on Android 17 helps keep things running as they should, with 4 years of full updates and 6 years of security updates guaranteed.

Battery life is the standout feature — the 7,700 mAh capacity makes it possible to go 2 days without reaching for the charger under normal use, and up to 3 days with lighter usage.

As a bonus, the REDMI Note 17 5G supports high-wattage reverse charging, making it a handy portable power bank to charge other devices — including other smartphones — without eating into the energy needed for that first day of use.

One negative worth highlighting is that the REDMI Note 17 5G has only a single speaker, which brings the multimedia and gaming audio experience below expectations.

The camera — yes, just the one rear camera — does a good job overall. Post-processing can be slightly overdone in some scenarios and with certain colours, but in the vast majority of cases this is a smartphone that delivers good photos with plenty of detail when the light allows, ready to be shared by most users.

As the light drops, so does the REDMI Note 17 5G’s ability to keep up. Processing tends to push contrast and certain colours to compensate, leaving darker areas with very little — or no — detail.

Overall, this is a solid smartphone ready for all challenges, with one clear recommendation: when it comes to RAM, go for the 8 GB option rather than 6 GB without hesitation — the price difference is minimal and it will make a meaningful difference both now and over time.

The REDMI Note 17 5G is available in Black, Celestial Purple, and Sky Teal, with a recommended retail price starting at €349.99.
