In Portugal, all cars are required to undergo a periodic inspection, with the only exception being the first few years after the car’s registration.
If it is time to inspect your plug-in hybrid or electric car, do not forget the charging cable so you do not fail.
A charging cable is mandatory at the periodic inspection of electric or plug-in hybrid cars
If you are going to have an electric or hybrid car inspected, there is a rule you should know, as it differs from the usual process for petrol or diesel cars.
While it is not legally mandatory to keep this charger in the car when driving on public roads, owners of these types of vehicles must present a charging cable at the inspection, otherwise they will fail and have to repeat it.

This rule is set out in Deliberation No. 723/2020 of 3 July, with the cable being mandatory to comply with two points:
- 10.6.1 – Anti-start device inoperative – Ensuring the car does not start with the charging cable connected.
- 10.8 – Charging cable – Checking the car to confirm whether it is damaged.
This is therefore an obligation you must meet. If you do not have a cable, you should borrow one to carry out the mandatory inspection, or you can buy a Type 2 cable for €91 or a domestic cable for €96.
