Microsoft 365 Family storage drops from 6 TB to 2 TB shared from May 2027

Microsoft is changing the storage model for Microsoft 365 Family, and the practical result is a significant reduction for most families.

The subscription, which currently includes 1 TB of OneDrive for each of its six members (6 TB in total), will move to 2 TB shared across the whole family. The change applies to existing subscriptions from their first renewal after 2 May 2027. If you renew before that date, the change will take effect at that renewal.

Microsoft frames the change as a gain in flexibility, since storage “automatically goes where it’s needed” and anyone who requires more space can use it without being constrained by an individual quota.

In practice, however, a family with six members making full use of the plan goes from 6 TB to 2 TB — a two-thirds reduction.

Who is affected and when?

New subscriptions and plan upgrades have already included the new model since 8 October 2026. For existing Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers, the transition will only happen at the first renewal after 2 May 2027, with advance notice by e-mail.

There is, however, one exception. Those who change plan before that date — for example, switching from Family to Premium — may see the change applied immediately as part of the subscription switch.

What changes by plan?

Microsoft 365 Personal (one user) is unaffected and keeps its dedicated 1 TB. Basic continues with 100 GB for the account holder. Family and Premium will move to 2 TB shared between up to six members, and the new Pro plan offers 5 TB shared. It is possible to expand up to 10 TB in total by purchasing additional storage.

Privacy maintained, storage reduced

Microsoft emphasises that shared storage does not affect file privacy. Each member continues to see only their own documents and photos, unless explicitly shared. What changes is solely how space is counted — moving from individual quotas to a single shared pool.

For families that use OneDrive heavily, it is worth reviewing current usage before May 2027 and considering whether the 2 TB shared allowance is sufficient or whether additional storage will need to be purchased.
