These days we take hundreds or thousands of photos on our smartphones that end up stored away and organised into categories, never given the purpose they deserved in another era.
Since great photos deserve to be seen, we had the opportunity to test the PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album — a small digital frame with an e-ink display that can be placed on the fridge or on a desk.
Here is this little gadget that lets you relive memories every time you open the fridge door.

PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album review — Your photos on the fridge in a wireless e-ink frame
Most of the photos we have taken over the past few years are trapped on a screen, buried in a gallery we rarely open.
PICPAK proposes a different way of seeing them — a small e-ink frame that places your favourite memories in a physical space, without permanent cables, without constant energy consumption, and with the grainy aesthetic of a vintage photograph.

It connects via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to the app on your phone to transfer photos, holds around 700 images, has an automatic shuffle mode, and an integrated magnet for attaching to the fridge or any metal surface — plus a foldable stand for use on a desk or bedside table.
It is priced at $59 per unit with free shipping from 2 units.
Design and build quality
The PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album is a digital photo frame with a minimalist look that recalls the old Polaroid aesthetic.
At the top sits a 4.2-inch e-ink display for showing photos or other types of content.

Just below is a shuffle button for moving to the next photo or image.
On the back are the magnets for attaching the frame to the fridge or another metal surface, and the kickstand for placing it on a desk or bedside table.
The PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album is available in four colours — red, yellow, black, and white — and has compact dimensions (99×92×6mm), although the chin below the display is a little prominent relative to the rest. It weighs just 69 grams.
Usage modes and versatility
The PICPAK is designed to be used as a fridge magnet, allowing personalised decoration in the kitchen.
On the back, two magnets hold the device firmly on any metal surface, supporting its weight without issue.

If you would rather place it on a shelf, bedside table, or other piece of furniture, simply deploy the integrated kickstand and use it as a traditional frame.

E-ink display and image quality
The PICPAK uses an e-ink display to function as a wireless, personalised decorative element that does not require frequent charging.
With this type of display, high image quality is not the goal — the focus is on low power consumption. Up close, the image visibly consists of small dots at a low resolution.

However, the PICPAK’s display is designed to be seen from a distance. Stepping back from the frame, the image quality improves noticeably — the dot pattern disappears and the image appears much cleaner.

The result is a vintage look — slightly grainy and with less saturated colours.
Beyond uploading your own photos from your smartphone, there is also the option to use artwork, quotes, or fun facts provided by PICPAK via the cloud.

App and photo transfer
PICPAK uses an app of the same name to manage the device’s settings, battery, and storage.
On opening, you can connect your device straight away, with the initial setup done via Bluetooth.

On the PICPAK itself, hold the button for a few seconds to enter pairing mode, then initiate the process from the smartphone.
Although it can work on Bluetooth alone, connecting to your home Wi-Fi ensures broader connectivity.
In the app, you can choose the type of content to display — including a daily selection of artwork, quotes, or fun facts managed and delivered by PICPAK via the cloud.

Alternatively, up to 700 photos from your smartphone can be uploaded — the transfer can be done via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, with the latter enabled through the Cloud Album Sync option.

When uploading an image, you can crop it or choose which area to display.

Images are then shown on the PICPAK display in rotation — either manually by pressing the physical button or automatically at a customisable interval between every 30 minutes and once per day.
There is also the option to enable fridge door detection, so the image changes automatically every time the door is opened.

Battery life
PICPAK claims up to 217 days of battery life without needing to charge.
However, runtime depends on how frequently the image changes. When selecting the update frequency, the app shows an estimated battery life — from 217 days for one update per day down to around 6 days with an update every 30 minutes.

In our experience, we used the most frequent update setting and the battery lasted in line with what the brand indicated.
If you enable the fridge door option, the same logic applies — the more the door is opened, the faster the battery drains.
Who is the PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album for?
The PICPAK is for anyone who wants to bring the photos buried on their phone back to life, without resorting to traditional digital frames that need to be plugged in.
It is particularly well suited to those who want to personalise their kitchen with family memories, travel photos, or special moments in a discreet, cable-free way.

It is also a great gift option. The ability to pre-load photos before handing it over makes it a personal and distinctive present for grandparents, parents, or friends who are not particularly tech-savvy — once set up, it runs completely on its own.

For those looking for a digital frame with high resolution and vivid colours, the PICPAK is not the right choice. E-ink technology has inherent limitations in terms of image quality and colour saturation, and photos with high contrast and close-up subjects fare much better than landscapes or highly detailed images.
Verdict on the PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album
The PICPAK Mini E-Ink Album is a genuinely charming gadget that solves a real problem in a creative way.
Most of our photos end up buried in a smartphone, never seen again — and placing a small wireless frame on the fridge is an elegant and practical way to bring those memories back into daily life.

E-ink is the right technology for this product. The low power consumption allows months of use without charging, the absence of backlight makes it discreet and fitting in any environment, and the grainy vintage look gives it a character that a regular digital frame simply does not have.
Setup is straightforward and the app does what it sets out to do well, though customisation options are still fairly basic. The fridge door detection that automatically changes the image is a creative detail that works in practice.

The slightly large chin at the bottom of the display is the only aesthetic detail that stands out and could be improved. The limitation with low-contrast photos or blue-toned images is worth bearing in mind when selecting what to upload — but with the right photos, the result is pleasant and has its own character.
At $59, it is a reasonable proposition for what it offers — especially considering that once set up, it runs for months without any intervention.
